The Next Book

November 16th, 2018

My first book is off with beta readers. So I am Starting my next one. This one is more speculative fiction/sci-fi than the epic fantasy of my first book. Starting has been rough on this because I have had to do several technical tests for potential jobs. Which unfortunetly has stopped me from working on the novel.

I had wanted to try for a NaNoWriMo (National novel writing month). But I plan on my book being longer than the 50,000 words that NaNoWriMo requires.

Now I have started writing the new book. I have made a few changes to my process for this book.

  • Planning the book- I have a complete map of all the major events from start to end. I am naturally a discovery writer so this is unusual for me. This time I have a map and it is vague enough that I still have the pleasure I get in telling myself a story.
  • Tracking my characters- Names and Descriptions. I have them on the flashcard option in Scrivner. I can see them much clearer and reference much faster than the weird documents that I had before
  •  Recording locations – in particular descriptions and locations relative to other things. In the first book, distance broke my timeline in a way I know I will need to resolve.

I am not rushing this book. I have other priorities as the year comes to a close.  I think I will go hammer and tongs at it in the new year but for now, I am going to gently add a few hundred words at a time. I plan to continue fleshing out the bare bones that I have from my outline into a proper draft.

I am not rushing the book but I am having a much easier time writing it. It probably helps that I am not dealing with cancer and the brain fog side effects that come with it.
