I should be writing-the book

December 4th, 2017
I should be writing is the book by Mur Lafferty host of the podcast by the same name. It is filled with a basic overview of what you can expect as you start your writing career. I first discovered Mur about 10 years ago through her heaven podcast. I have listened to I should be writing on and off ever since. It is through her I found the magic spreadsheet the first accountability tool I have used. My first attempts at forming good habits,

The book.

The book offers an overview of the publishing world. and the struggles that come with being a writer at any levels. It feels like its giving you a harsh view of writing both as a career and as part your life. This harshness is there but at the end of reading it, you still want to write thats when you might be a writer. The book has two concepts of the bully and the muse. the bully being the one who tells you the mistakes you make and ow your not good enough. the muse is the one offering encouragement and ideas. Throughout the book, they appear in little blue and red speech bubbles. Offering advice and make little jokes. I dont think they all land. They can come off as being a bit corny but the advice is good. They are an effective way of showing that the negitive thinking can turn into to a positive.
The second half of the book is filled with writing prompts. I could see myself using as inspriation for other blog posts, though I dont see myself using them for m y own stories. I have notebooks full of ideas. though a few of the prompts might make some verygood blog posts. What the book is is a distlation of the podcast and murs core tennents of write, keep wtiting and you can edit it later. It’s a good introduction for someone ho is looking to start their first novel and isnt sure where to begin. But because I am a lomg time listener to the podcast I dont feel it offered me anything new.

Should you buy it?

This book really is for anyone who wants to write and isnt sure where to start. It is a beautifully designed book with prompts to come back to if you get stuck for ideas. Or you are looking at moving from one stage of writing to the next. ( draft >editing > publishing) This book gives you a basic plan to get going with.
