In 2020 I decided to do a project to help me learn to use Affinity designer. The project I chose was to create a deck of Lenormand Cards. Lenormand cards are a deck of 36 cards named for the french fortune-teller Madame Marie Lenormand. However, the cards themselves have nothing to do with the woman who likely used several different cartomancy methods. The cards are read by placing them in pairs or more and combining keywords to make interpretations almost like mad-libs. Unlike tarot, the cards are relatively simple objects with clear associations. For example, in tarot, death has meanings like transition or death, whereas the coffin in Lenormand has implications of death, grief and loss. I took inspiration from stained glass in my cards designs, creating scenes and images with dark lines against bright fragmented shapes to create shape and texture. I created a small WordPress plugin to display the cards and pull together some keywords for interpretation to show off the Lenormand designs. I designed the plugin so that multiple instances of the plugin can be on the same page and not interfere with each other. It was built using a mixture of PHP javascript and So go ahead, think of a question and push the button to see if the Lenormand oracle can offer insight. Or admire the pretty pictures I made.
