Review: The drunk project

May 12th, 2014

The Drunk project is the second in a series of plays by the renters theater company and is a powerful and intense look at the irish culture around alcohol.

A mixed media play it combines acting  , recorded interviews , pictures and powerful monologues to describe the how we relate to alcohol in our own lives.

This is a fantastic play its deeply personal and incredibly relatable in all its aspects there is not a single story that isn’t recognizable from even the most casual stroll down temple bar on a Saturday night. so many of the stories are ones I have either lived or witnessed in the process of growing up. from the idea of dutch courage to pre-drinks and relationships this play looks at it all and the realities it contains

The Actors do a fantastic job in inhabiting their roles and telling their personal stories and acting  rolls where the transition seamlessly into being other people.

The interviews are recorded  in a pub setting  and as such don’t always have the clearest dialogue between the interviewer and interviewee but that only serves to highlight the atmosphere that people become part of when they are out drinking.

This isn’t an easy play to watch its brutally honest and makes you look at yourself very hard and question you own relationship around alcohol. I came out of it speechless it will take some time to fully process what I saw and felt watching this play. but I definitely recommend it.
