I recently bought a new Guitar, because I am living I’m my mums and my main acoustic Guitar is in storage and I found I really missed having a guitar around. Which is funny because I Have owned a guitar since I was 15 and I can play chords one thing I could never do was Memorise a song. If there is one thing musically I consider a weakness it is my memorisation skills. So when I got this beautiful Tanglewood crossroads Semi-acoustic guitar I decided to set myself a challenge.
I planned to learn 12 songs in 12 weeks. just chord progressions and to my families detriment lyrics. I always wanted to be able to sit down with people and play a tune off the top of my head. Now I am approximately A month in and I have learned 9 songs. Of varying difficulty so far I have learned
The Song list So far:
Valley of the Dolls -Marina and the diamonds.
Providence – poor man’s poison
Rhiannon – Fleetwood mac
Just like a pill – pink
Capable of anything – ben folds
Guitar hero – Amanda palmer
Old number 7 – The devil makes three
My song – Brandi charlie
I will follow you into the dark -Death cab for Cutie.
I can play most of them pretty fluently with a bit of work and solidifying needed on the “chordier” songs. Playing music is my passion and I love sight-reading but playing the guitar from memory is a whole other level of Fun.
I am not sure what is different and why this attempt at learning songs has gone so well (so far) I think it is because I am immediately trying to play from memory after one reading. Then Its a case of going back and correcting myself. until my fingers and the lyrics just line up in my head
Soon I will Video myself playing some of these songs I will link them and update As this goes on.
